(Poem by the late Daniel King) Blood Red Skies/Astral Miasma
I've crossed unfit Martian skies
chalice of stars burning my hollowed eyes
chariot hearse lunar pull
transfixed the red dust cries
of those who came before.
Stone monument
in darkest sway
eternal desiccation
no flesh remains.
I've travelled here through black gates
cold, astral burial
I am nothing and one of no place.
Organs of the sky
play to endless phantoms
such that all man would cry...
Weapons of Martian tides
frost laid landscape night
just Ice Giants
laid to rest the millennium upon iron spikes...
Noxious exhalations from putrescent somber souls
carved in soulless cosmos, awaiting a clandestine constellation
for their spirits regained.
Poisonous effluvia opened mouth of greatest caverns
breathing into space, casting outwards
plume of serpents, arc high death bringer such sights.
But not here, Hellas Planitia a crater
having gouged out its own eyes.
Cut through death, none can
though I have tried
My wandering gaze the procession of black principles
monks of miasmic deformation
my spirit wasted; ill conformed.
And pale membrane of star spatter descends
like light from the other side.
But the Night Mares have carried off
all bodies Phobos / Deimos
moons lost to the dark riders
of farther places.
Ancient eyes, knowing deeper skies
silver spheres like gods
carrying travelers of another kind.
